The Social Enterprise & Entrepreneurship Northern Region Partnership project or “SEE” for short, seeks to address Northern Ontario’s social and economic challenges by encouraging a movement of social enterprise and entrepreneurship that stresses community resilience, innovation, support and mobilization.
Social Enterprises have a mission to address social, environmental or cultural challenges by reinvesting profits above operational expenses back into their missions, and using a triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) to measure their success. Social Enterprises take many forms including, non-profits, co-operatives and sole proprietorships to name a few.
For the past four years, NORDIK, and most notably SEE, have been instrumental in capacity building, training and support for social enterprises and entrepreneurs, first through the three-year SEE project sponsored by the Ontario Trillium Foundation focused at Youth Social Entrepreneurs, now with the Social Enterprise & Entrepreneurship Northern Region Partnership project, focused on developing social enterprise supports for both economic development organizations, service providers and social entrepreneurs.
The goal of this project is to demonstrate to Northern Ontario that social enterprises are a viable opportunity to expand the Northern economy. Many communities and economic development services are looking for more resources to assist them in better serving social enterprises and entrepreneurs. SEE will develop educational resources and community supports to allow service provider organizations better assist Social Enterprise.
By using a community-based, bottom-up approach and a network of social enterprises, social entrepreneurs, sector participants, service providers, businesses and community-based organizations reflecting the cultural, linguistic and geographic diversity of Northern Ontario, SEE will enhance and expand social enterprise resources across the region.
